Michael Afriyie

Information Security Intern

with the Virginia State Police

“My internship with the Virginia State Police has been amazing, and I’m beyond grateful for the experience. Every day I come in and learn something new about cybersecurity, whether it’s mitigating risks, identifying vulnerabilities, or understanding how the team operates as a whole. I’ve had the chance to shadow my mentor, sit in on meetings, and connect one-on-one with professionals across the department, which has helped me better understand everyone’s roles and responsibilities. I’m currently working on a project about cryptographic failures, while also completing ISC2 coursework and preparing for an upcoming exam. The team has been incredibly welcoming, the workload is manageable, and the work culture is one of the best I’ve experienced. I haven’t faced any major challenges so far, but when something does come up, like wrapping my head around a new coding application, I’ve been proactive in scheduling time with experts to learn more. It’s been a rewarding and knowledge-filled journey so far.”
