Afsaneh Doryab, Ph.D. Speaker Series Recap

Afsaneh Doryab, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Systems and Information Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Virginia. She specializes in computational behavior modeling and ubiquitous computing, with an emphasis on developing intelligent systems that use data from mobile, wearable, and embedded sensors to understand human behavior. Her work has broad applications in health, well-being, and social impact. Dr. Doryab earned her Ph.D. in Computer Science and Information Technology from the IT University of Copenhagen. On last Tuesday, she shared insights on “Prediction of Mental Health State from Mobile and Wearable Data.”

Dr. Doryab’s presentation explored a mobile application designed to monitor and manage adolescents’ mental health by engaging multiple stakeholders, including youth, caregivers, and clinicians, in the process. The system uses passive sensing technologies and machine learning to model behaviors and predict mood and mental health outcomes in real time. By integrating continuous data from smartphones and wearable devices, her team builds predictive tools that can detect early signs of mental health challenges. This research aligns with the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative Central Virginia Node’s mission to apply AI and cybersecurity innovations to critical areas like health and social well-being.
