Brad Campbell, Ph.D. Speaker Series Recap

Dr. Brad Campbell is an Associate Professor at the University of Virginia, holding joint appointments in the Departments of Computer Science and Electrical & Computer Engineering, as well as being a member of the Link Lab. His research focuses on developing next-generation low-power, wireless, and secure Internet of Things (IoT) systems aimed at enhancing the sustainability of buildings and cities. Dr. Campbell earned his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 2017 and has been with UVA since then. On Tuesday, February 25 he shared his insights on “Efficient Wireless Sensing.”

Campbell’s research addresses the limitations of batteries in sensors, including their restricted lifespan and environmental impact. Energy harvesting, which allows sensors to collect energy from their surroundings, enables continuous operation but adds complexity to sensor design. This study aims to model the availability of harvestable energy in smart agriculture and smart buildings, facilitating the development of self-powered sensors.
